product description

A588 Grade A is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel with increased atmospheric corrosion resistance. This grade of steel is formulated for use in welded, bolted, or riveted construction where structural integrity and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance are important. It is typically used when the environment is vulnerable to corrosion.

A588 Grade A steel is produced under ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) specifications and has been widely accepted by the construction industry as a viable material for bridges and other large structures due to its atmospheric corrosion resistance.

The primary alloying elements in A588 Grade A steel are chromium, copper, and nickel, which provide superior atmospheric corrosion resistance. The primary strength-producing elements are copper, nickel, and molybdenum. These each form carbide particles that settle in the grain boundaries and on the matrix. The metal also includes phosphorus and sulfur, both of which are considered trace elements and play an important role in improving the strength and hardness of the metal.

The production process for A588 Grade A begins with melting and pouring the metal into ingots. The ingots are then reheated and organized into bars in the hot rolling process. The bars are then cold worked and heated again through a hot rolling process. This is followed by heat treatment, which is designed to create the desired microstructure. The resulting product is then tested for chemical composition, dimensional accuracy, and strength and hardness.

The chemical composition of A588 Grade A steel is as follows: %C - 0.19, %S - 0.010-0.06, %P - 0.035, %Mn - 0.80-1.25, %Si - 0.30-0.65, %Cr - 0.40-0.65, %Ni - 0.30-0.50, %Cu - 0.20-0.40, %Mo - 0.15-0.25. A588 Grade A steel is highly resistant to corrosion and displays excellent weldability, forming and machinability characteristics.

A588 Grade A provides greater levels of corrosion resistance compared to other structural steel. This is especially significant when used in exposed environments that are subject to regularly changing weather conditions. The high levels of corrosion resistance combined with its strength and durability make A588 Grade A an appealing material for use in many different types of applications.
