product description

Weathering steel, also known as atmospheric corrosion resistant steel, is a type of material that provides better corrosion resistance [than] traditional carbon steel. A588 Grade C is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, meaning it is easily resistant to rust and other forms of corrosion in most climates with minimal maintenance.

The chemical composition of A588 Grade C steel is as follows:

Carbon (C): 0.19 – 0.25%

Manganese (Mn): 0.75 - 1.35%

Phosphorus (P): 0.04 – 0.25%

Sulfur (S): 0.18 - 0.37%

Silicon (Si): 0.13 – 0.4%

Chromium (Cr): 0.25 - 0.4%

Nickel (Ni): 0.4 - 0.65%

Copper (Cu): 0.4 – 0.65%

Vanadium (V): 0.03 – 0.08%

Columbium (Cb): 0.015 - 0.06%

Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15 - 0.25%

Among the above chemical components, C, P, S and Ni contribute the most to the corrosion resistance of A588 Grade C steel.

The production process of A588 Grade C steel starts with the preparation of materials. The raw materials are melted in an electric furnace and poured into a continuous caster where they are formed into billets. After that, these billets are reheated in a furnace until they reach the desired temperature and then they are extruded into rods and bars of various sizes. After that, the hot-working process is performed to form the desired shapes and profiles.

The surface of the material must also be treated in order to protect it from corrosion. Therefore, after the hot-working process, the material is subjected to cold working, also known as work hardening. This process further strengthens the material and improves its corrosion resistance.

Finally, the material is subjected to galvanizing, painting or zinc-rich priming in order to further protect it from corrosion. This coating helps to prevent rusting of the material and prolong its service life.

Overall, A588 Grade C steel is an ideal choice for applications requiring good corrosion resistance, as it can withstand various forms of atmospheric corrosion easily with minimal maintenance. Moreover, the production process of the material is cost-effective and it can be formed into various shapes and sizes.
