product description

A588 Grade K weathering steel is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel commonly used in the production of infrastructure products such as bridges and guardrails. It has the unique ability to form a protective barrier against corrosion, rust and other weathering elements. It has excellent solderability and is easy to manufacture for use in the most demanding environments. Due to its strength and corrosion resistance, A588 Grade K is an excellent choice for components exposed to harsh environmental conditions or where high strength solutions are required.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of A588 Grade K weathering steel consists mainly of iron and other alloying elements, with a maximum carbon content of 0.20%. The other alloying elements present in A588 Grade K include copper, chromium, manganese, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, vanadium, and phosphorus. In addition to providing strength, these alloying elements help protect the steel from corrosion. Furthermore, they create a uniform and consistent surface that holds up better to wear and tear. The minimum tensile strength of A588 Grade K is 50ksi.

Production Process

A588 Grade K weathering steel is typically produced through a hot rolling process that utilizes open hearth furnace technology. Steel billets are heated up to a temperature of around 1650°F (900°C), before being worked through series of rollers and hammered into the desired shape. The steel is then cooled, with careful temperature control, before being cut to the necessary length for its application. Once cut, the steel can be welded to other structural elements, such as guardrails or bridges. Afterward, it is ready for application.

A588 Grade K weathering steel is an excellent choice for infrastructure projects that are exposed to the elements or require a high strength solution. With its impressive strength and corrosion resistance, it is a reliable and durable choice for a variety of applications. After hot rolling, the steel is cut and welded for its intended use. The chemical composition of A588 Grade K includes iron, carbon and various alloying elements to improve its strength and corrosion resistance.
