Chemical Composition of A588 Grade B Weathering Steel

A588 Grade B is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel used primarily in construction applications. This grade of steel is also known as ASTM A58

product description

A588 Grade B is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel used primarily in construction applications. This grade of steel is also known as ASTM A588 weathering steel. A588 Grade B is made from a combination of elements including chromium, nickel, phosphorus, and copper. It features a yield strength of 50,000 psi (340 MPa) and a tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa).

A588 Grade B steel is primarily composed of the following chemical elements:

Carbon: 0.19-0.25%

Manganese: 0.75-1.30%

Phosphorus: 0.03%

Sulfur: 0.030%

Silicon: 0.20-0.35%

Copper: 0.25-0.40%

Nickel: 0.4-0.65%

Chromium: 0.4-0.65%

Columbium: 0.0005-0.005%

Vanadium: 0.01-0.10%

The characteristics of A588 Grade B steel include a high resistance to corrosion, especially when exposed to air and moisture, and good ductility, formability and weldability. A588 Grade B steel also contains small amounts of other elements such as sulfur, vanadium, and columbium, which helps the material to resist corrosion.

A588 Grade B steel has a range of uses, including for bridges, for construction applications and for use in marine environments. It is particularly effective for use in coastal and marine environments where corrosion resistance is needed. A588 Grade B also has a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning that it is effective for use in different types of structures where strength is needed, such as bridges and buildings.

A588 Grade B weathering steel is a corrosion-resistant material that is made from corrosion-resistant elements and alloys. When exposed to air and moisture, A588 Grade B forms a layer of rust on its surface, which acts as a barrier to further corrosion. This rust layer helps the material to resist corrosion and maintain its strength over time.

The corrosion resistance of A588 Grade B is higher compared to other grades of steel with similar compositions. This grade is resistant to both atmospheric corrosion and chloride-salt spray corrosion, making it suitable for a wide range of applications such as bridges, construction, marine environments, and many more.
