Weathering steel, which is often referred to by its trademark name COR-TEN (or simply Corten) steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting and form strong, self-protective finishes. A588 Grade K is a variation of a regular weathering steel grade, A588 Grade A, which, along with A588 Grade B, A588 Grade C, and A588 Grade K, comes with different levels of impact resistance and potential applications. The most common variant of A588 Grade K is the A588K-50 grade, which is a Kalkreuth Zink-Korrosionsgeschutz galvanized grade designed for cost-effectiveness, outstanding corrosion protection, and good formability.

Low temperature properties of A588 Grade K depend on the variation of the specific grade being used. A588K-50 has great thermal shock resistance, allowing for easy installation and repairs in areas with temperature fluctuations without losing structural integrity. However, it should be noted that A588K-50 has a much lower yield strength than other grades at temperatures below 0°F. A588K-50 is also more prone to cold cracking at temperatures lower than 0°F than other grades due to its high carbon content and low Nickel content.

A588 Grade K has excellent low temperature toughness, making it an ideal choice for outdoor structures exposed to sub zero temperatures. This is due to its combination of high carbon, nickel, and chromium content, which allows the alloying of the steel to maintain its strength, ductility, and impact resistance during the cold weather. Furthermore, it is one of the few weathering steels that is weldable, allowing for repair and maintenance without having to be re-processed.

It is important to note that weld preheat temperatures should be kept above 250°F to reduce the risk of cold cracking. Additionally, A588 Grade K is highly work hardenable and requires the use of proper preheating and post-heating procedures when welding.
