product description

Weathering steel, commonly referred to by the generic trade mark COR-TEN steel, sometimes written without a hyphen as weathering steel, is a group of steel alloys developed to eliminate the need for painting and to develop a stable rust-like appearance over years of exposure to Appearance after weather.

The grade of steel analyzed in this report is A588 Grade C. This grade is a high strength low alloy steel, which exhibits 50 ksi minimum yield strength and 70 ksi minimum tensile strength. The alloys used in its manufacture include copper, chromium, nickel, silicon, and phophorus. Although this grade is not meant to be used for pressure vessels and boilers, its strength and toughness make it an ideal choice for bridge construction, and other similar structures.

The tensile strength of A588 Grade C Weathering Steel is identified through a tensile test. During a tensile test, the metal is pulled from two opposite ends, while its behavior is recorded. This defines its properties in regards to deformation, and provides data about the behavior of A588 Grade C Weathering steel under tensile force. Results normally display values of ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, Young’s modulus, and the elongation.

The tensile strength of A588 Grade C Weathering Steel is up to 70 Ksi, with a minimum of 50 Ksi. In comparison, this is higher than that of ASTM A36 mild steel, which has a maximum tensile strength of 58 Ksi, and a minimum of 36 Ksi. This suggests that A588 Grade C Weathering Steel is much more robust under tensile force.

In relation to its general tensile strength, this grade has a 0.2% proof strength of 50 Ksi and a 0.2% offset yield strength of 45 Ksi. The resulting elongation of this alloy grade is rated at 16%. As well, the Young’s modulus is identified as 30 GPa.

A588 Grade C weathering steel has a maximum tensile strength of 70 ksi, a minimum tensile strength of 50 ksi, and a 0.2% guaranteed strength of 50 ksi. Additionally, it has a 0.2% offset yield strength of 45 ksi, an elongation of 16%, and a Young's modulus of 30 GPa. Its high tensile strength makes it ideal for bridge construction and other similar structures.
