product description

A588 Grade K weathering steel is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel alloy with a yield strength of 50 ksi minimum. This material is well suited for industrial applications that require a higher tensile strength than standard steel grades, such as bridges, buildings, transmission towers, and other structures that require greater tensile strength and durability.

A588 Grade K steel is unique in that it exhibits improved atmospheric corrosion resistance when exposed to certain environments. This corrosion resistance is due to its superior ability to form a protective oxide layer. The oxide layer consists of a barrier containing chromium, nickel, and copper which helps protect the underlying steel from oxidation. This protection is enhanced by a low carbon content, as well as non-metallic inclusions that help trap micro nutrients in the steel, inhibiting penetration of oxygen into the alloy.

The unique microstructure of A588 Grade K steel includes a combination of ferrite and martensite, which provides the metal excellent strength, abrasion resistance, and wear resistance. This metal is considered “weathering friendly” due to its low carbon content, meaning it does not become brittle when exposed to harsh weather conditions.

A588 Grade K steel is typically found in various types of construction projects and manufacturing applications, such as structural beams, transportation equipment, and agricultural machinery. This metal is also used to manufacture solar panels, pipelines, and other structures that may be exposed to severe weather conditions. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, it is also used for shipbuilding and marine structures.

Because of its superior corrosion resistance, A588 Grade K weathering steel is often referred to by the moniker “The Weathering Steel.” This material is suitable for outdoor applications, such as bridges, buildings, transmission towers, and other structures that must withstand a range of atmospheric conditions. Despite its superior corrosion resistance, A588 Grade K steel must be properly maintained in order to retain its superior strength and wear resistance, and to maximize its long-term performance. Proper maintenance includes treating the metal with rust-inhibiting and rust-preventing compounds, and cleaning the metal on a regular basis.
