Weathering Steel Grade A588 Grade C is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel that is primarily used for applications requiring superior corrosion resistance. A588 Grade C steel is often referred to as “Corten” steel, or “weathering” steel due to the distinct characteristics of the alloy.
A588 Grade C is designed to exhibit superior corrosion resistance in numerous atmospheres, including marine, industrial, rural and urban environments. This corrosion resistance is usually attributed to the presence of copper, nickel and other alloying elements within the alloy which, when exposed to the atmosphere, form a protective patina that is exceptionally stable and therefore resistant to atmospheric corrosion. This patina is formed by an electrochemical reaction between the alloy and the elements found in the atmosphere, which can accelerate oxidation and create a thin, protective film on the material’s surface.
The weathering resistance of A588 Grade C is such that it can easily withstand the natural weathering process for several years with minimum rusting. This superiority compared to regular carbon steel has proven itself very useful across a range of applications.
