ASTM A588, A242, and A606 are the most commonly used specifications for high-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) when rust and atmospheric corrosion resistance are important. These three alloys are commonly referred to as weathering steels. They form an adherent protective barrier on the steel surface, thereby slowing down the corrosion process and increasing the corrosion resistance of the material.
The chemical composition of the three materials is similar, with the other key difference being their yield strength. A588 and A242 have yield strengths of 70 ksi and 50 ksi respectively, whereas A606 has a yield strength of 80 ksi. Additionally, A242 and A606 have a tensile strength of 50 ksi and 65 ksi respectively, whereas A588 has a higher tensile strength of 70 ksi.
The three alloys are used most commonly in applications such as bridges, steeples, storage tanks, towers and other structures where atmospheric corrosion resistance is required. A588 is often used in combination with a weathering steel core and galvanized facing that resists rust and provides a long lasting weather resistance to the core.
