product description

A588 weathering steel is a high-strength, low-alloy steel plate to which copper, chromium, and nickel alloys have been added. It is a high strength grade of steel plate that is much less resistant to atmospheric corrosion than carbon steel. This weathering steel has higher tensile strength and resistance to crevice corrosion than usual carbon steel.

The corrosion resistance characteristics of A588 weathering steel plate are very unique. It can handle wind, snow, rain, and even fog without worrying about damage. The copper, chromium, and nickel in the steel help form a strong bond with oxygen, blocking these elements and creating an airtight barrier that resists moisture. As this layer forms, the steel surface chemically changes, turning brown and releasing an attractive patina that prevents further displacement.

Due to its strength, A588 weathering steel plate is a popular choice in many structures, such as bridges, girders, and more. As it ages, these structures become even more resistant to corrosion, creating a beautiful facade to welcome any passerby. Its strong protective qualities also make it perfect for use in exterior cladding and roofing projects.

Whether you’re looking for a steel plate to withstand extreme temperatures or harsh environmental conditions, A588 weathering steel plate is a great choice for many industrial or structural applications. When silicon is 0.15%, this steel plate can reach up to 42-46 KSI and 50-65 KSI at up to a 2.1” thickness. Impressive abrasion and impact resistance with maximum ductility and weldability give it superior handling in design as well as construction.

The technical data of A588 weathering steel is closely associated with its chemistry, mechanical strength, weldability, and fabrication methods. Its carbon content ranges between 0.05-0.20%, and its min. yield strength is 50 KSI for thicknesses up to 1.25”. This steel plate can meet the ASTM A572 and A572M-18 standards. It shows good toughness, welding and forming abilities, and mechanical properties.

A588 weathering steel plate is suitable for many corrosive environments. It can resist saltwater, as well as chemical corrosion, making it ideal for dock, pier, and bridge projects. In addition, its resistance to corrosion makes it useful for chemical process equipment, railroad cars, and pipeline shafts. This steel grade should be considered for any atmospheric corrosion application that involves large objects with greater than 1/2" thickness.

A588 weathering steel plate is a high strength, low alloy steel plate that is well suited for any structural application. Its chemical composition, mechanical properties, and weather resistance make it the preferred choice for many bridges, girders, and other structures.
