A588 Grade A weathering steel is a structural steel alloy often used in the construction of buildings and bridges. It is composed of low alloy steel and features an improved level of atmospheric corrosion resistance, thanks to its copper, nickel, chromium, and phosphorus content. This type of steel is often used in outdoor applications where it is exposed to varying levels of moisture and airborne chemicals, so it is important to understand its chemical resistance properties.

The following provides an overview of the chemical resistance of A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet.

Acids: The chemical resistance of A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet to acid attack is generally low. Acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid can cause corrosion of the surface of the steel sheet. This type of corrosion is usually characterized by pitting of the metal’s surface, which can result in decreased strength, thickness, and longevity of the sheet.

Bases: A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet has good resistance to most alkaline solutions. There are some exceptions, however, and strong alkalines such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and ammonium hydroxide can cause corrosion and pitting.

Gases: A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet provides excellent resistance to most common atmospheric gases, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. However, exposure to hydrogen sulfide and other acidic gases can cause corrosion.

Organics: Most organic compounds will not have a significant effect on A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet. However, there are some exceptions, such as halogenated hydrocarbons and some petrochemicals, which may cause corrosion if they come into contact with the steel sheet.

Solvents: A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet has good resistance to most common solvents, including anhydrous alcohols, water-based solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. However, some solvents such as ammonia, ethylene glycol, and formic acid can cause corrosion of the steel sheet.

A588 Grade A weathering steel sheet has good resistance to most common atmospheric gases, solvents, bases, and organic compounds. However, it does not have great chemical resistance to acidic gases and acidic liquids. This type of steel is often used in outdoor applications, so it is important to be aware of its susceptibility to corrosion in order to protect it from the elements.
