product description

A588 Grade A is a high strength, low alloy structural steel developed for use in the construction of bridges and other structures. It is characterized by a high level of corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and good strength and ductility. This makes A588 Grade A an excellent material for use in applications exposed to the harshest elements of weather, including heavy rainfall and intense UV radiation. The stability of this steel when exposed to the elements is enhanced by its ability to form a protective surface layer of oxide.

The dimensional stability of A588 Grade A is highly dependent upon its chemistry and its surface finish. The low carbon content of the steel reduces the chance of intercrystalline corrosion and promotes good weldability. The addition of copper in the alloy provides outstanding atmospheric corrosion resistance. The presence of chromium, nickel, copper and phosphorus combines to form an oxide film that is highly resistant to water, oxygen, and other corrosive elements. The oxide layer is further stabilized by the presence of phosphorus, with its high heat-resistant properties. Phosphorus also promotes the formation of a strong and durable oxide layer.

In addition to the alloying elements, the surface finish of A588 Grade A plays a critical role in its dimensional stability. The steel must be properly prepared and coated prior to use to ensure long-term corrosion resistance and dimensional stability. Precise temperature controls during welding must also be observed, as excessive heat input can cause rapid oxidation resulting in a decrease in the steel’s dimensional stability.

A588 Grade A has been rigorously tested in laboratory testing to ensure its suitability for use in extreme applications. The steel has been subject to accelerated corrosion tests under various conditions such as accelerated weathering, cyclic salt fog, cyclic humidity, and abrasion resistance. These tests demonstrated that this steel is characterized by outstanding dimensional stability even under prolonged exposure to moisture and temperature extremes.

Overall, A588 Grade A is an excellent choice for applications demanding superior corrosion resistance and superior dimensional stability. Its excellent weldability and low carbon content provide exceptional performance when exposed to the harshest elements. The addition of copper and phosphorus enhances its corrosion resistance and strength, and the surface finish provides long-term dimensional stability. Furthermore, laboratory testing confirms its stability even under prolonged exposure to moisture and temperature extremes.
