Weathering steel, often referred to by the genericized trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys developed to form a stable rust-like appearance after several years’ exposure to weather. A588 is a high-strength, low-alloy steel used by fabricators and welders in production and maintenance applications. Its weathering components, copper, manganese, and chromium, enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloy and protect it against degradation.

The copper in the alloy helps to resist corrosion by forming rust-resistant patina on the surface of the metal. Manganese increases the strength and hardenability of the steel, while chromium reacts with oxygen to form a thin oxide film, which ensures resistance to corrosion over time. This thin oxide film acts in two ways: it serves as a protective barrier against further damage, and it traps and holds surface moisture, which slows the rusting process.

What makes A588 particularly suitable for outdoor applications is its high tensile strength and yield strength. Its tensile strength ranges from 65 to 85 kilopascals (KPas), which is about twice as strong as mild steel. Its yield strength, which is the amount of force it can withstand before deforming, is also twice as strong as mild steel. This high tensile strength and yield strength make A588 highly durable and resistant to being dented and scratched.

In addition to these properties, A588 is also environmentally friendly. Its corrosion-resistant components release no hazardous materials and are considered safe for the environment. A588 can also be recycled, which reduces the amount of material that ends up in landfills.
