ASTM A588 covers high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction but intended primarily for use in welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important.
ASTM A588 is a high strength low-alloy structural steel specification with higher strength and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance for structural steel shapes such as angles, channel and beams, as well as steel plate and bars.
ASTM A588 is primarily used for:
Pedestrian Bridges
Highway Bridge Girders and other bridge components
Shipbuilding
Tanks
Railcars and Containers
Fencing
Sculptures
The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A588 is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly designed and exposed to the atmosphere, A588 is suitable for many applications in the unpainted condition.
The A588 specification is intended primarily for use in unpainted applications, where savings in weight or added durability is important along with the longer life cycle due to its corrosion resistant properties and/or to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
