ASTM A588 is a high-quality low-alloy structural steel, its main components are C, Cr, Mo, Ni, and the content of titanium is 0.25%.
The steel has good corrosion resistance, good hot workability and moderate weldability. It has good low temperature impact toughness and similar low temperature impact toughness (ASTM A450) to steels such as ASTM A407 and ASTM A510.
ASTM A588 is a weather-resistant structural steel applied to high stress, using a special quenching process and low temperature tempering process.
ASTM A588 steel has better low-temperature tempering performance below 400 °C, and can be tempered at low temperature below 400 °C. Its tensile strength is 535 MPa and yield strength is 690 MPa.
According to the Japanese ASTMA standard, ASTMA588 is produced in a state containing 0.25% titanium, and its chemical composition contains a relatively high content of titanium atoms, and titanium atoms play an important role in the toughness of steel.
In order to ensure higher hardness, strength and toughness during quenching and low-temperature tempering, ASTM A588 steel generally adopts multi-layer quenching, multi-layer tempering and pre-adding low-temperature tempering processes.
In order to ensure low tempering brittleness of ASTM A588 steel below 400°C, the molten steel needs to be preheated during the quenching process.
Cooling immediately after the preheating process prevents brittleness caused by the high temperature required for martensitic transformation.
The multi-polar flame heating method can ensure good hardenability of ASTM A588.
The multi-layer furnace treatment process can ensure that the steel plate obtains good hardenability before quenching.
