product description

A588 Grade K weathering steel plate is a high strength product designed to provide excellent corrosion resistance and strengthen bridges and other infrastructure. This grade of plate is also known as Corten B. It is mainly composed of iron, chromium, manganese and nickel, with small amounts of other alloying elements. A588 Grade K chemical composition is:

Iron: Up to 98.5%

Chromium: 0.4% to 0.65%

Manganese: 0.4% to 0.65%

Nickel: 0.4% to 0.65%

Copper: 0.2% to 0.4%

Silicon: 0.2% to 0.4%

Phosphorus: 0.15%

Sulfur: 0.5%

A588 Grade K has a unique chemical make-up that is specifically designed to withstand environmental elements such as wind, rain, pollen, ice, and snow. This plate’s iron component provides the foundation needed to produce further alloying elements.

The chromium provides A588 Grade K with superior corrosion resistance. This particular alloy is 7 to 8 times more resistant to corrosion than mild steel, making it an ideal choice for outdoor structures, specifically those located near bodies of water or areas subject to high levels of air pollution. With the addition of chromium, it helps to lower the total material costs.

Manganese and nickel are both present in A588 Grade K to aid with tempering and ultimately increase the strength of the steel. Both significantly contribute to the tensile strength of the steel and help with forming characteristics. Additionally, their presence also helps to reduce hot tears caused by welding.

The copper and silicon are the last two core components of A588 Grade K. Their addition to the steel further increases the corrosion resistance, elasticity, and strength. Copper helps to harden the metal and reduce the likelihood of crack formation, while silicon helps to provide additional ductility, making the steel easier to form and weld.

A588 Grade K is one of the most reliable weathering steel alloys on the market. Its exceptional strength and durability make it ideal for bridges and other structures exposed to harsh environments. Its resistance to corrosion and oxidation is designed to reduce the amount of maintenance required over time. This steel is especially suitable for those looking for an economical solution.
