product description

Weathering steel, also known as corten steel, is a group of steel alloys that have a natural corrosion-resistant property. These alloys form a protective layer on their surface when exposed to the elements, which gives them their distinctive rusty appearance. ASTM A588 and A709 are two popular grades of weathering steel used in building materials.

ASTM A588

ASTM A588 is a high strength, low alloy specification with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance for structural steel shapes such as angles, channel and beams, as well as steel plate and bars. The A588 specification is intended primarily for use in welded bridges and other structures where savings in weight or added durability is important along with the longer life cycle due to its atmospheric corrosion resistance. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A588 is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly designed and exposed to the atmosphere, A588 has a life expectancy of 50 years or more.

A588 is available in steel plate and starts at 3/16” thickness and increases up to 5” thickness. A588 is a high-strength low-alloy steel plate used in structural applications such as bridges and buildings where weight savings and durability are important. When properly designed and exposed to the environment, A588 can be used bare or unpainted for many applications in the unpainted condition. It has a yield strength of 50,000 psi and a tensile strength of 70,000 psi with elongation in 2 inches at 21% and reduction of area at 50%.

A709

ASTM A709 is a high-strength low-alloy steel specification. Its atmospheric corrosion resistance is a natural complement to other types of steel plate. ASTM A709-50W is a standard specification for structural steel in bridges. ASTM A709-50W covers high strength, low allow steel structural shapes, plates and bars. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition. ASTM A709-50W shall have an atmospheric corrosion index of 6.00 or higher. When properly designed and exposed to the environment, A709-50W can be used bare or unpainted for many applications in the unpainted condition.

A709 is available in steel plate and starts at 3/16” thickness and increases up to 6” thickness. A709 is used in bridge building applications where weight savings and durability is important. It has a yield strength of 50,000 psi and a tensile strength of 65,000 psi with elongation in 2 inches at 21% and reduction of area at 42%.

Benefits of Weathering Steel

Weathering steel is ideal in outdoor applications because of its ability to resist corrosion, rust and decay. It also has excellent strength and durability properties, making it perfect for use in harsh and demanding weather conditions. When exposed to the elements, weathering steel forms a layer of rust that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion, which stops the deterioration process in its tracks.

In addition to its excellent weather-resistant properties, weathering steel is also environmentally friendly. Its low maintenance requirements mean that it does not require regular painting or coating, which helps to reduce the amount of waste generated by building maintenance activities.

Applications

Weathering steel is commonly used in construction projects, bridges, and outdoor sculptures. Its distinctive, rusty appearance makes it a popular choice for architects and designers looking for a unique finish to their projects. Weathering steel is also commonly used in coastal areas, where it is exposed to saltwater and high winds.

Conclusion

ASTM A588 and A709 weathering steel are two popular materials used in building and construction due to their excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and strength. These materials are ideal for use in harsh and demanding weather conditions, making them a popular choice for outdoor applications. They also have low maintenance requirements and are environmentally friendly, which makes them a cost-effective and sustainable option for builders and construction companies.
