Weathering steels, known under the trademark A588 Cor-Ten steel products, are a group of steel alloys developed without painting to develop a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.
In order to protect the steel plate from corrosion caused by erosion, a mixed treatment of spraying and pre-painting should be adopted. The spraying treatment should first use mechanical sandblasting treatment on the surface of the steel plate. The sand particles should be medium or coarse particles that meet the requirements. After the dust is completely removed, the surface requires a uniform pounding. Generally, the surface of the steel plate is run by an automatic sandblaster of a certain thickness, and the surface layer is completely removed to achieve the rolling texture. It should also be polished with a roller, grinder or hand-held electric drill. After the flattening treatment, rust remover is used to remove the surface rust.
Next is painting. It usually consists of 3 layers. The first coating is mainly anti-corrosion primer or zinc-rich primer, whose main function is anti-corrosion. The second coating is the filler coating, which covers the cracks of the underlying layer and enhances the smoothness of the A588 weathering steel plate. The third one is topcoat, which is usually a finish coating with different colors or an anti-corrosion finish coating. Generally, the coating thickness of each layer is 100-150 microns.
After painting, the spraying process should be continued. A metal spraying welding process, such as electrode spraying, plasma spraying, etc., should be performed. It should be noted that the electric current of the spray gun should be constant, so as to ensure the spraying speed and welding effect of the metal spraying. After metal spraying, a high voltage electrostatic spray process should be performed. This process provides a better corrosion protection and shock resistance to the steel plate. After spraying and electrostatic spraying, a protective layer should be applied to the sprayed surface. Generally, a simple corrosion resistant coating can be applied, such as using based epoxy paint, acrylic paint or central oil paint, etc.
Finally, the A588 weathering steel plate should check some quality before use. The appearance of the steel plate should be checked to ensure that there is no rust, dust and other impurities on the surface. It should be inspected for any defects such as cracks or scratches. Coating adhesion should also be checked. The coating should not come off easily. The total thickness of the sprayed coating should also be measured. If the spray coating is not thick enough, the protective effect of the coating will be reduced. Therefore, the whole spraying process should be carried out under strict quality control.
