Corten A, Corten B, S355J0W, S355J2W and S355K2W are important grades of weathering resistant steel used in bridge engineering. The letter "A" in the Corten A refers to the steel grade of the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and indicates that the steel materials have excellent performance in air-resistant corrosion levels. The letter "B" indicates the rusty steel grade of Corten B.
S355J0W and S355J2W are similar, because they are in the same steel grade. The main difference is the deep-drawing property of S355J2W steel. The letter "K" markers are classified into weather-resistant steel grades according to their special capability. The letter "K" stands for "Kelvin". S355K2W steel has a special resistance to atmospheric corrosion, which is twice that of ordinary carbon steel.
The Corten A and B are often used for long-term outdoor structures. The steel has good corrosion resistance, strong toughness and low thermal conductivity, and meets the minimum requirements of ASTM A588 standard. The mechanical properties of Corten A are better than those of regular carbon steel, and the toughness is especially prominent at low temperature. The Corten B tensile strength is higher than that of ordinary carbon steel. The micro alloy elements such as copper, chromium and nickel are added to enhance the corrosion resistance.
Corten A is suitable for welding and cutting, and it is no problem for Cold Bending and Cold Flanging. Corten B can be used normally with out cold bending and cold lengthening.
S355J2W is suitable for manufacturing steel structures resistant to atmospheric corrosion and can be used normally in the free state. It is equivalent to Q345qC (16MnqC) in China. The engineering application of S355J0W and S355J2W is the same.
The surface of weather-resistant steel is coated with a protective layer-patinated oxide film. It consists of a combination of corrosion products formed in the process of atmospheric corrosion. This thin patinated oxide film can prevent any further corrosion of corten a b weather resistant steel sheet. The surface of steel should be cleaned regularly to ensure its long-term durability.
