ASTM A588 is a standard specification for high strength,Low alloy Columbium-Vanadium structural steel. The specification covers five grades of high-strength steel alloys,A588 Grade A,A588 Grade B,A588 Grade C,A588 Grade K,and A588 Grade K.A588 Grade C covers atmospheric corrosion resistance in the form of corrosion-resistant steel.
The A588 Grade C specification is intended primarily for use in welded bridges and other structures where savings in weight or added durability is important. This specification provides a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (483 MPa).The specification covers atmospheric corrosion resistance in the form of corrosion-resistant steel. The corrosion resistance of A588 Grade C steel is improved by alloying elements such as copper, chromium, nickel, and silicon.
A588 Grade C exhibits atmospheric corrosion resistance far superior to that of carbon steels.A588 Grade C steel has improved atmospheric corrosion resistance properties in comparison to other steels.A588 Grade C is used for welded, bolted,or riveted construction in bridge, building, and other applications that require enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. These shapes are primarily used in bridge construction and other outdoor applications where durability and enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance are required.
A588 Grade C steel is produced by heat treatment of A588 Grade C steel plates to achieve a desired chemistry, which reduces the brittleness that could be caused by welding and improves the mechanical properties of the material. The A588 Grade C steel plates also includes additional alloying elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel. These alloying elements help to improve strength, toughness, weldability, toughness, tensile properties, and wear resistance.
A588 Grade C has excellent corrosion resistance properties, making it a popular choice for structural projects exposed to the elements, both indoors and outdoors. The combination of these elements in A588 Grade C provides excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance such as oxygen and nitrogen, making it ideal for use in bridges and other structures located near the sea,on coast lines, and near bodies of water. When properly exposed to the atmosphere,A588 Grade C steel is suitable for many applications in the bare (unpainted) condition.
