Production Process of A588 Grade C Weathering Steel

A588 Grade C weathering steel is a high-strength, low-alloy steel typically used in applications requiring increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion. As a low alloy steel, A588 Grade C weathering steel has better corrosion resistance than structural steel and is often the material of choice in a variety of applications due to its superior corrosion resistance. It has a yield strength of 50 ksi and a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi. This makes A588 Grade C weathering steel ideal for projects where strength and corrosion resistance are critical.

The production process of A588 Grade C weathering steel begins with the manufacture of steel billets, followed by hot rolling into thin sheets or plate. The plate is then cooled and passed through a pickling line to remove surface contaminants before going through a cold rolling process. The thin sheets of steel produced during this process are then passed through an annealing process, which relieves internal stresses and improves the strength of the steel. The steel is then cut into the desired size and shape and passed through a grinding process that eliminates any remaining surface contaminants.

Next, the A588 Grade C weathering steel is blast cleaned and preheated to a temperature of 500°F to 650°F. This temperature is necessary to promote the formation of a thin layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel. After the preheating process, the steel is cooled and allowed to further heal any internal strains before it is coated with a thin layer of paint or a combination of paint and rust-inhibiting chemicals. Once the coating has been applied, the steel is heated again to a temperature of 600°F up to 900°F, which is necessary to promote the formation of a corrosion-resistant layer of iron oxide.

Additional testing is then performed on the A588 Grade C weathering steel to ensure it meets industry standards for corrosion resistance. Once the steel passes these tests, it is ready to be shipped.
