product description

Weathering steel, often referred to by the genericized trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys developed to form a stable corrosion-resistant surface after several years exposure to weather, potentially eliminating the need for painting in many environments.A588 Grade B is a material grade and designation defined in ASTM A588 standard. ASTM A588 is an American material standard for hot Rolled steel plates for corrosive environment & high strength applications.

Material Properties

The following material properties are ASTM specifications and will be confirmed on the Mill Test Report. Thickness Yield Point (ksi) Tensile Strength (ksi) Min. 2 Elongation % 4" 16 16 4 8" 19 19 4.

Weathering refers to the chemical composition of these steels, allowing them to exhibit increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to other steels. This is because the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather.

The corrosion-retarding effect of the protective layer is produced by the particular distribution and concentration of alloying elements in it. The layer protecting the surface develops and regenerates continuously when subjected to the influence of the weather.

In other words, the steel is allowed to rust in order to form the 'protective' coating. The corrosion-retarding effect of the protective layer is produce din by the particular distribution and concentration of alloying elements in it. The layer protecting the surface develops and regenerates continuously when subjected to the influence of the weather.

Weathering steel consists mainly of a blend of very small amounts (<0.2%) of Chromium, Nickel and Copper, added to ordinary steel and thus AMM's Historical Monthly Average spot price data production costs are not affected.

Corrosion Resistance

A588 Grade B steel plates and sheets are applied mostly on weathering construction components and bridge structural parts. ASTM A588 Grade B Corten steel widely used in air preheater, economizer, railway carriage, containers production, bridge building, construction and so on.

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A588 Grade B is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 Grade B can be used in bare (unpainted) condition for many applications.

The A588 Grade B steel plates and sheets also have high tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation after fracture. It is typically used for bridges, buildings, railway cars, and other structures where mechanical properties of higher strength, durability and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance are required.

When compared to other steel alloys like those containing copper, nickel, or chromium, the A588 Grade B steel shows an excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion. This includes exposure to industrial acid gases and urban air pollution, making it an excellent choice in a wide range of applications where atmospheric corrosion is an issue.

In conclusion, A588 Grade B is highly resistant to corrosion and can withstand environments that are more challenging than mild atmospheric conditions such as coastal locations, saline areas and humid industrial facilities. The atmospheric atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than that of carbon steels with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 Grade B can be used in bare (unpainted) condition for many applications.
