Weathering resistance is the ability of a material to remain undamaged when exposed to outdoor environment. A588 Grade B Weat

product description

Weathering resistance is the ability of a material to remain undamaged when exposed to outdoor environment. A588 Grade B Weathering Steel is a copper chromium alloy steel – this alloy displays a greater level of resistance to atmospheric weather condition than that of ordinary carbon steel. It also displays a high level of corrosion resistance to environments that are acidic, or high in salts and moisture.

The atmosphere of the earth is a harsh and corrosive environment, resulting in external damage of objects exposed to it. The alloy elements in A588 Grade B Weathering Steel form a protective layer called patina that coats the outer surface of the material and shields it from further corrosion. The addition of the steel alloy increases the resistance of the material to atmospheric corrosion, compared with regular carbon steels.

The alloying of A588 Grade B Weathering Steel offer superior corrosion resistance compared to regular carbon steel grades, with respect to the rate of corrosion. This superior corrosion resistance is due to the formation of a stable rust-like appearance when exposed to the elements. The patina coating that forms acts to protect the steel underneath from further corrosion.

A588 Grade B Weathering Steel has a lower carbon content than some other carbon alloy grades, and therefore is more resistant to brittle fractures during welding. It becomes brittle after being subjected to temperatures below -20˚F. Therefore, A588 Grade B Weathering Steel is best suited for applications where materials may be exposed to temperatures in between -20˚F and +600˚F.

A588 Grade B Weathering Steel can be welded in the same manner as unalloyed steels, however it should be advised to preheat the structure before welding. This helps control brittleness in the weld region.

A588 Grade B Weathering Steel is most commonly used for its corrosion resistance in applications such as bridges and other structures where strength and durability are required. It possesses excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric environments. It is resistant to oxidation, sulfidation, and other forms of corrosion, making it suitable for projects in a range of different conditions, such as coastal and urban areas or sites with a high exposure to acidic or salty environments.

A588 Grade B Weathering Steel has high strength and a corrosion resistance that makes it ideal for applications exposed to the elements. Furthermore, its low carbon content makes it a great choice for projects where welding is necessary. Its stable patina coating provides a continuous rust-like appearance that provides consistent protection in any exposure environment.
